Refurbished vs Second-Hand vs Open Box: What the Words Actually Mean

Three words used interchangeably in Nepal's electronics market that mean three very different things for your money.

Last updated

Second-hand

A second-hand device is simply a device someone else owned, sold as-is. Nothing has been tested, nothing has been repaired, and there is no warranty. The price should reflect that risk, and usually it does — second-hand is the cheapest and the most uncertain way to buy.

Refurbished

A refurbished device has been inspected against a defined checklist, had failing components repaired or replaced, been cleaned, and been graded. The grade should be published and the seller should stand behind it with a warranty. The word only means something if the seller tells you what was checked — otherwise it is marketing applied to a second-hand phone.

Open box

An open box device is new and unused, but its packaging has been opened — a returned order, a display unit, or a cancelled sale. Functionally it is new, and it should be priced a little under new. Be careful with sellers who use open box to describe a device that has clearly been used.

How to tell which one you are actually being offered

Ask one question: what specifically was checked, and what is the warranty. A real refurbisher will answer with a list and a period. A reseller using the word loosely will answer with reassurance. At Camera Mobile Zone the checklist runs to 42 points, the grade is printed on every listing, and the warranty is a minimum of six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a used phone and a refurbished phone?

A used phone is sold in whatever condition its previous owner left it, while a refurbished phone has been inspected, repaired where needed, cleaned and graded before resale. At Camera Mobile Zone every device goes through a 42-point inspection covering battery health, display, body, cameras, ports and software, and is then assigned a condition grade that is printed on the listing. A used phone bought privately carries no such check and no warranty.

What do the condition grades A+, A and B mean?

Grade A+ (Like New) shows no visible signs of use, Grade A (Excellent) has very light signs of use such as micro-scratches visible only at an angle, and Grade B (Very Good) has light scratches or small marks that do not affect how the device works. All three grades are fully functional, quality-checked and warrantied, and any cosmetic imperfection is disclosed on the listing.

Is warranty included with refurbished products?

Yes. Every device sold by Camera Mobile Zone ships with a minimum six-month seller warranty, and up to twelve months on selected devices, covering functional defects. The exact warranty period for each product is shown on its product page. Physical damage and liquid damage caused after delivery are not covered.

Can I return a refurbished device if there is a problem?

Yes. Camera Mobile Zone offers a 7-day replacement window if a device does not match the condition it was listed at or has a functional fault. Report the issue within seven days of delivery with photos or a short video of the problem, and the device is replaced or the order refunded.
