How to Check a Used iPhone Before Buying It in Nepal

The seven checks that separate a good second-hand iPhone from an expensive mistake — IMEI, activation lock, battery health, and four more.

Last updated

Start with the IMEI, before anything else

Dial *#06# on the phone and compare the IMEI it shows against the number printed on the SIM tray and the box. If those three do not match, stop — the device has been rebuilt from parts or has had its logic board swapped. In Nepal there is a second reason to care: handsets imported outside official channels may not be registered with the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, which can cause network problems later. Ask the seller to confirm registration status in writing.

Confirm the activation lock is off

An iPhone still signed into someone else's iCloud account is a paperweight. Go to Settings, tap the name at the top, and confirm no Apple Account is signed in, then go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone and confirm the reset option is available without asking for someone else's password. A seller who will not let you check this is telling you something.

Read the battery health number, not the battery percentage

Settings, Battery, Battery Health and Charging shows maximum capacity as a percentage of original. Above 90% is strong, 85–89% is fine for most buyers, and below 80% means a replacement is due soon — which is a real cost you should subtract from the asking price. Also check whether it says Service, and whether the battery has already been replaced with a non-genuine part, which Apple flags on this same screen.

Test every camera and every microphone

Open the camera app and cycle through wide, ultra-wide, telephoto and front cameras, taking a photo with each. Then record a video using the rear camera and another using the front camera, and play both back with the volume up. Water-damaged iPhones very often fail on one microphone or one lens while everything else works fine.

Look at the screen properly

Display a plain white image and look for dark patches or discoloured areas, then display a plain black image and look for bright spots and backlight bleed. On OLED models, a static grey image will reveal burn-in from a previously displayed keyboard or status bar. Check that True Tone is present in Control Centre — its absence usually means the screen has been replaced with a non-genuine panel.

Check Face ID, ports and the small things

Enrol a new Face ID face — if the option is greyed out or fails, the module has been damaged and cannot be repaired cheaply. Plug in a charger and confirm it charges, test wireless charging if the model supports it, insert a SIM and confirm the phone registers on an NTC or Ncell network, and pair a Bluetooth device.

What buying from a shop changes

Every iPhone listed on Camera Mobile Zone has already been through these checks, with IMEI verified, activation lock cleared and measured battery health printed on the listing, and it ships with a minimum six-month warranty. You can still run all seven checks yourself when the courier arrives — cash on delivery means you pay after you have inspected the phone, not before.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a second-hand phone before buying it in Nepal?

Check five things before you pay: the IMEI number against the phone's dial-pad code *#06# and the box, the battery health percentage, whether any account lock such as iCloud or Google FRP is still active, every camera and microphone, and the screen for dead pixels or burn-in. Also charge the phone briefly to confirm the port works. On every Camera Mobile Zone listing these checks are already done and the results are published, and you can still verify them yourself before paying on delivery.

How do I check the IMEI of a phone in Nepal?

Dial *#06# on the phone to display its IMEI, then confirm that number matches the IMEI printed on the box and on the SIM tray or back panel. A mismatch means the device has been tampered with or rebuilt from parts. Nepal Telecommunications Authority also operates IMEI registration in Nepal, so an unregistered imported handset can have network issues — ask the seller to confirm registration status before paying.

What is the price of a used iPhone in Nepal?

The price of a used iPhone in Nepal depends on the model, storage size, battery health and cosmetic grade, so there is no single figure — a four-year-old model can cost a fraction of a two-year-old one with the same storage. Battery health alone can move the price of two otherwise identical iPhones significantly. Current prices for every iPhone in stock, with measured battery health on each, are listed on the Camera Mobile Zone refurbished iPhone page.

Is warranty included with refurbished products?

Yes. Every device sold by Camera Mobile Zone ships with a minimum six-month seller warranty, and up to twelve months on selected devices, covering functional defects. The exact warranty period for each product is shown on its product page. Physical damage and liquid damage caused after delivery are not covered.
